Importance Of Projection Screens

Projection screens cost money so the most common question is:

"Can't we just use a plain white wall and save the screen expense?"

The answer is simple: Would you consider adulterating your car fuel with kerosene for a cheaper alternative? If not then why compromise the projection quality when you can get a better picture by investing in a good screen. If you have already spent so much on a good projector, why not a little more to get a good end result?

Projection screens have special viewing surfaces that enhance their reflective properties. White walls don't. Using any wall you will get a watchable image. However, compared to the image you'd get with a screen, highlights will not be as brilliant, contrast and colour saturation will be reduced, and (depending largely on the texture of the wall) sharpness will be reduced as well. You will end up with an image that is not as good as your projector is capable of delivering.

Types Of Projection Screens

Front projection screens work on diffusely reflecting the light projected onto them, whereas back projection screens work by diffusely transmitting the light through them. Pull-down screens (WARSA) are often used in multipurpose spaces where permanently installed screen would require too much space.

These consist of a special fabric that is rolled in the screen case when not used, making them some what safer to damage than rigid screens.

Motorised screens are wall mounted or ceiling mounted. Motorised screens are similar to pull-down screens, but instead of the screen being pulled down manually, an electric motor raises and lowers the screen. Motorised screens are usually raised or lowered using either a remote control or wall-mounted switch.

Portable Tripod screens (TARSA) usually use a pull-down screen on a free stand. These can be used when it is impossible or impractical to mount the screen to a wall or a ceiling.

Projection Screens For Business

Boardrooms and training facilities are important environments. Projection screens are among the many necessary considerations when creating a meeting space that maximizes the potential of today's presentation tools.

Often the selection of a Projection Screen is not given much thought.

Selecting the right Projection Screen is a critically important element in a Video Display System. It is the final link in the picture deliver process and the visual focus of the entire room. The quality of many display systems is sometimes unfortunately compromised owing to improper selection of cheap and poor quality viewing surfaces.

Generally the following formula is used for determining screen size for Commercial and Educational applications.

•    Screen height should be approximately equal to 1/6th the distance from the screen to the last row of seats, allowing text to be readable and detail to be seen in the projected image. Optimally, the first row of seats should be approximately two screen heights away.

•    The bottom of the screen should be a minimum of 4 feet above the audience floor, allowing those seated toward the rear of the audience to see the screen. This may require additional screen "drop" for ceiling hung screens.

Projection Screens For Home Theatre

Considering the high cost of LCD and Plasma TVs today, the smarter consumers are turning to more affordable LCD/DLP projectors to get very large displays at home. Projectors come in variety of shapes, sizes, and price levels.

There are pros and cons of going with a projector. Projectors are small, portable, and easy to move around. Want to host a film festival in your living room? It's easy with a projector: A good projector can create an image far larger than the biggest of TVs. As noted, projectors are also cheaper than big TVs in most cases.

On the flip side few projectors have very good speakers in them, and even if they do, you probably don't want your sound coming out of two tiny speakers embedded in a projector mounted to the ceiling. You'll need to run all your A/V through a receiver, and hook up speakers separately to enjoy a good home theatre experience. Also Projector bulbs get hot and also burn out after a couple of thousand hours or so. That's almost a year or two based on typical usage, and replacement bulbs are costly.

Then there's the issue of where you're going to put this projector. You need a clear line of sight between the projector and where the image will be. Will you display on a wall, where any imperfection will mar the image? No way! Buy a good screen to mount on the wall or ceiling or else get a portable screen which can be set up anywhere in minutes. If you want an image the size of a mini theatre and a thoroughly enjoyable cinematic experience at home … The Projector with a Projection Screen is your best choice!

The following formula is generally used for determining screen size for home theater applications:

•    Screen height should be approximately equal to 1/4th the distance from the screen to the last row of seats. Optimally, the first row of seats should be approximately two screen heights away.

•    The bottom of the screen should be a minimum of 2 feet above the audience floor. This may require additional screen "drop" for ceiling hung screens.

If you are serious about good image quality, you will always be glad you bought a good Projection Screen.

Guidelines to Selecting the Right Screen

A few guidelines for selecting the right Projection screen.

a. Calculate the perfect screen size based on room dimensions, maximum audience seating size and arrangement. The rule is to fit the screen to the audience - not to the projector.

b. Select the appropriate format for your projection application. eg. 4:3 ratio for TV viewing 16:9 ratio for Home Theatre and Movie viewing.

c. Choose the screen surface that best suits your projection and viewing requirements

d. Pick the type of screen that best suits your particular needs. For example, choose from front projection screens in either portable, wall or ceiling mounted models in either manual or electric versions or rear projection screens. Generally, if your projection application is permanent, then wall and ceiling screens are your best choice. If, however, you find your needs require moving the screen to different locations then a portable screen is a better alternative.
